Ella me decía, “mira tu estarás aquí, tienes suerte estarás conmigo”… ¡wow! me sorprendí mucho y me dijo ella, “¿qué pasa?

EVA (IV): “The Little Wolf”

The weather was cold, I loved its streets and the market was beautiful, too big to get lost, even though some people recognized it. For safety reasons I always wore a cap, that’s why now I hardly wear them, there are times when vague memories of those days come to my mind, and it is not so recommended, but as a true warrior in those days I learned a lot to protect myself.

The day came “…damn you look great”, they all said.

I felt strange, I didn’t understand anything but it wasn’t closed either and I knew where all those comments were going, taxis arrived for us, we got in four at a time to be comfortable, the taxi driver for his part seemed strange looking at me and tried to make me talk but the girls said, “don’t overwhelm her, let her, the newbie makes her debut today,” and the more and more my nerves got, I felt like they were kidnapping me, I wanted my wolf but now I would become that, or a “wolf.” The young man looked at me in the mirror with a look of compassion or perhaps he was wondering if it was by will or against my will, I felt his eyes on me all the time, at the traffic lights twice he sighed and said, “ladies, she is young.” The rookie doesn’t believe it,” Eva smiled and said, “Just as you see, they’re waiting for you,” and the princess grabbed my hand and said in my ear, “Don’t worry, they’re crazy, I’m going to teach you.” to be more of a bitch than those fools if you want of course”, and he closed one eye for me.

The taxi driver was young, about 35 years old, he was dark-skinned with small eyes and a beautiful smile. At some point he said, “Write down the number because I always take them back but sometimes not all of them, I make several trips,” and I smiled nervously and shook my head saying yes. I felt the road was so long, what had happened in Ensenada came to my mind, I felt like my blood was running through my entire body and my hands were sweating, but I had to bravely face whatever was coming.

The departure was at 7 at night but before that we spent almost the entire day getting ready, of course I only did what I could, the others look too much like they were going to compete for Miss Universe, they did turn out very beautiful, they smelled so delicious, the expensive perfumes were just like some beautiful ladies.

One of them tried hard to teach me how to look presentable, since I would be meeting the person who would hire me for the first time, that was my nerve, but in the end I said: “here I am going maybe to the slaughterhouse or maybe to fulfill my dreams.” What were they? ? Well, you will win well.

The gum had already told me something more or less, I already knew where I was going to go, it was all adrenaline for me, on the way I prayed the Lord’s Prayer and not just once, many times as if that was going to be my salvation, How naive I was in those times I believed that the moon was made of cheese.

I started to see big advertisements, lots of lights, it looked like a fair, everything looked very nice. I raised my head and looked out the window of the taxi and the young man saw how surprised I was, he smiled all the time and said to Gum, “I think he likes the girl, right,” he said out loud, you know coastal girls are like that, it’s worth it. and they speak so loudly that you can hear them for blocks. The young man, for his part, parked and like any gentleman he got out and opened the doors and said good luck girls, I’ll be watching, and the gum told him, “you know, I’m the last one” and they both laughed and he said, “yes, yes yes, I know.”

We began to walk, the princess was the first and Eva was behind, I was in the middle, and Chicle was the last. It was as if we were going through a catwalk. For my part, my legs were shaking, my hands were sweating. I saw everything around me that was very elegant and the Princess stopped and said, “girls, let’s succeed, let’s go with everything” and she grabbed my hand and said, “this is the time to come in and see if you like it” and if you don’t just look at Eva, don’t pay any attention to her and tell me. He grabbed my chest and said, “This is the one that will tell you if you’re from here or not,” and that’s fine, if you decide. Eva, for her part, said, “don’t pay attention to her, she already got her sweet and she’s going crazy,” I just laughed and we continued walking, but we weren’t the only ones, taxis arrived with more ladies and as if nothing had happened, they entered the place where we were going. and Chicle said, “let them come in, we are the queens here” and they laughed like crazy, it was like that; type “my life is worth it to me”.

My ears began to hear noise and more noise: there were 4 entrances, I saw one in particular that all the girls entered, but my band, as I saw it, walked and walked until they entered one in particular, we went straight to see the person who would hire me. and Eva took a few steps forward and said, “leave me and I’ll speak first,” but Chicle stopped her, pulled her and said, “if you do what you know how to do, it’s not fair for the girl.” I didn’t understand anything, I just saw her blank eyes. Each one, the three of them looked at each other, then she said, “My name is Clara and I’m Gum, what’s your name?” She gave me her hand and without words I didn’t know what to say, I felt a ringing in my ears, it was as if They would have thrown me into the universe of a madrassa and the princess said, “hey girl, wake up here you have to be a bitch because out there the others will eat you alive”, I shook her hand and said, “my name is Selene”, I don’t know what happened through my mind but I didn’t say my real name. Eva came closer and whispered in my ear, “apparently you’re not as stupid as I thought,” the princess said, “my name is Estefania and they call me princess.” How are they going to call you, I quickly said. “wolf”, because that’s what I had to become if they didn’t eat me and I had to survive that night.

The hallway was getting so narrow that I felt like I couldn’t breathe less and less, my heart was beating fast, my legs were about to collapse, the princess didn’t let Eva speak, she wanted her to introduce me to the person we would see at that moment, she said. Since you are in my group, I am going to help you to make it faster and let’s get out of here because my wallet is losing. She took me by the hand and we continued walking for a reason, Chicle said, “I’ll wait for you outside, I’m lazy, I already know what they’re going to say blah blah blah and anyway we’ll be the ones who train this brat,” and she He stayed there in a clear chair, there were several of them throughout the entire route we took.

Finally, in the background you could see a very beautiful brown wooden door, it shone because of how beautiful it was, I was surprised as always. THEY KNOCKED and a voice was heard saying, “Come in my queens”.

The princess opened it from the front and said; “Hello, we are here and this is the little wolf”, I was near a very huge flower arrangement, the smell of the flowers calmed my nerves… nervously I said, “good night”, the person smiled and said, “you weren’t there.” wrong Eva is beautiful”, the young Eva remained serious, she did not say anything, the princess spoke and spoke many things that I reserve for privacy reasons.

That person was approximately 45 years old and said I want her by your side princess, she will only see what the movement is like and Saturday will be her big day, you will take care of that.

Eva, for her part, looked disconcerted because her look was one of anger or jealousy towards the princess and that person with a smile told me, “welcome, I am at your service.”

We left that place and Eva then said, “it’s all your luck”, we walked around the whole place, there were 3 categories. The first was for people, according to them, of low income, the second was for more or less people and the third was for people already know about the high. She told me, “look, you’ll be here, you’re lucky you’ll be with me”… wow! I was very surprised and she told me, “what’s wrong? Why do you think your friend, according to you, is upset? Well, this is why, she is in the other one with the gum and when someone doesn’t come then they come here but they are not good and she closed her eyes to me.

That’s how she began to teach me people, she whispered everything in my ear and just with her eyes she focused on who it was. She was very nice and told me, “When I got here it was horrible, they treated me badly for a moment. I wanted to leave but my father was very sick with his heart.” and God is great, I met a lady and she managed to get me here where we are” and I told her, and “where is she?”, she sighed and said, “in heaven”, I didn’t ask any more, I felt that it hurt her to remember.

That night it was just seeing and seeing, everything was like a movie no matter how much I looked for the beginning and I couldn’t find the end.

It was time to leave, tired of everything, Eva was dead, and Eva had already left.

The taxi driver talked to me but since I was tired I didn’t talk much. We arrived and so the girls began to tell stories, some good and some not so good with little money and others very happy with enough.

They asked how my presentation had gone. They were surprised when Eva said, “Lucky Lobita” and they all shouted, “eeeeeeeeee Lobita” it was like when you get baptized something like that, the second day was the same, I looked and looked since it was something new for me. I felt out of place, I was afraid, I think that was it.

“The time has come,” they all said, for my part I was aware of everything and was willing to be a different person when we arrived one of them told me do you want a sweet so you won’t be nervous on the contrary you will be happy and I said no what I do will be With conscience it will be my problem if I sink and flee from this place. The truth is that I learned some things, it was something simple, but my insides told me, “You’re not from here, leave, don’t do it,” since I don’t know if it was luck or my ignorance could be seen a thousand miles away or maybe my youth, I don’t know what it was but Yes, I had people sending me tickets and that meant a lot and it was up to you whether to accept them or not.

The surprised princess said, “girl why don’t you accept this color because the colors were also what you would win”, I told her, “I don’t want to, as I do, there are already many” and she smiled and said, “I know why you don’t want to”.

He said, “Follow me and take care of this, okay?” And so I did, everything she told me, “you help me and I will pay you, how do you see? But we have to do it very quickly because the more beautiful she is, the more she wins.” You have to decide if you want this or not.” Well, I had no choice but to work for the princess. There I saw mistreatment of women, look how some of them left there and it was normal but no, that was not my thing. I saw Eva a little since I was only there for 2 weeks. One day a person told me, “You’re not from here, right?” I told him, “No,” and he said, “If you were my daughter, I would take you home right now. With watery eyes, I said, “If you were my dad, I would leave right now.” and that’s how after that conversation I left the place without telling anyone anything to my friend, I only told Estefania, she hugged me and said, “I would like to have your strength to leave this place,” I told her and “why?” “Why don’t you do it?” he told me, “I can’t and it’s better that you leave before something else happens, I know what I’m telling you.”

And yes, that’s how I left, with some money but very disappointed in what I said was my friend.

    — Oh, muchas gracias, tal vez unos bolillitos hija.

    Flavor of the Broth

    Story about diversity

It was a cold and windy afternoon in my town. I was wearing my favorite jeans, with that white sweater that my grandmother knitted for me a few years ago, on top of it a long black waterproof jacket of the latest fashion, and my old, very comfortable boots that still allowed me to walk on all terrain. I loved that the different things in my clothes made me look very good.

I was walking along the cobblestone street that led to the church of La Lupita, a huge construction that stands out for its bell tower and its figures carved in limestone which adorn its façade, making a frame for the beautiful mahogany gate. In the atrium, which is also a colorful garden, every Sunday Doña Meche cooks and sells her delicious pinole and cinnamon pancakes and atole.

That day I was heading to the bakery. My family was craving a frying pan: a freshly baked concha, a cuernito, a polvorón, or a tie. On my way, I was admiring the flowers and plants that my neighbors had hung in unique pots from the canopies of their houses. Beautiful natural and colorful decorations that looked spectacular after the contrast of the clear and intense blue sky.

The chickens clucked because of the noise the goats made as they passed on a pilgrimage down the street shouting from their owner. The dogs barked at the birds, and at the cows too. The pigs grunted as they ate, and the donkeys brayed. Hahahaha, in that moment I thought I heard a symphony of animals, all singing at the same time.

When I was passing by my aunt Laura’s house, I smelled an exquisite aroma coming out of the window, ugh! That smell distracted me so much that it forced me to turn around, and I felt hungry unexpectedly, I walked just a few more steps and I couldn’t resist, I knocked on the door, and my aunt appeared, a short, dark-skinned woman with spectacular long black braids that competed with those of the little Lele doll hand-embroidered on her raw blanket apron.

—Aunt, good morning! How are you doing?

—Hello, good morning, hija! What are you doing here?

    — I thought quickly.

    — I’m going to bakery, and I wanted to know if you offered anything.

    — Oh, thank you very much, maybe some little bolillos, hija. But come in, come in, I’ll give you money.

    — Thank you, aunt. Wow, it smells good! What did you cook?

    — I’m making a molito de olla for your uncle Lalo who just returned. Today he went to visit his compadre, Polo.

His compadre is an older adult who has used a wheelchair for some time, and who together with his wife, both sell palm products in the market. They make hats, baskets, vases, and even complete nativity scenes to celebrate Christmas.

    — Molito de olla? How did you prepare it?

    — Ah, well you see, I prepared the broth with guajillo chili, ancho chili, and pasilla chili, I added various vegetables such as chayotitos, potatoes, green beans, zucchini, carrots, elotito, I seasoned it with garlic, onion, epazote, spices and salt. This time I stewed it with beef backbone, and I’m going to add some chochoyotes.

—Aunt, it smells and looks delicious!

—Would you like to try it? This is how you accompany your uncle and me to eat.

    — Of course, yes aunt, thank you.

With enthusiasm I rubbed my hands and settled down to enjoy that molito de olla. My uncle came in, greeted me, and approached the table. He was a tall, thin, white-skinned man, wearing his usual chaps. He invited me to drink some cured pine nut pulque. A traditional fermented concoction of the region, made from mead extracted from maguey, which is known to have probiotic properties due to the complexity of its compounds: sugars, proteins, vitamins, yeasts, bacteria and even alcohol.

I took the first spoonful, and the explosion of flavors I felt was exciting, simply delicious. The combination of all the ingredients worked magic on my palate. In addition, my aunt was already preparing some freshly made tortillas on the comal with one of the varieties of corn that my uncle grows on his land.

That afternoon I had an unforgettable afternoon, my uncles and I talked and laughed. While we were eating a guava pie that my aunt had made yesterday, my cell phone rang.

    —Well, Olga?

—Inés? Yes, it’s me. My mom says, where have you gone now? Carlitos already wants his bread, and you don’t show up.

Embarrassed, I said goodbye, thanked him for the food and the company, and ran to the bakery. Hahaha, what a “oso”. Soon I returned to deliver the balls and went home.

Before going to sleep, I hugged my family, and gave thanks for that day. How beautiful see all that landscape, those colors, those sounds, those sensations, those aromas, those flavors, those personalities, all that variety of things filling life with emotion and surprise!

It’s good that we are different, how good that diversity exists!

We must respect and take care of this diversity so that we continue enjoying days like this, and of course a delicious molito de olla.

Without a doubt, diversity is what gives “flavor to the broth”.

      I. Sin dirección

      irreversible,
      juego de piernas anudadas
      sin retorno a la libertad.

      III. Cotidiano

      Está la casa
      sin salida,
      el menaje de visita
      y los cuerpos de metal
      en la hora del recreo.
La platería aún conserva la imagen
      de cuando todos éramos otros,
      y ahí mientras me miro

      Quehacer infame e insuficiente
      para entender
      el sonido del agua lenta
que se escapa por la tubería
      con huellas dactilares
      sin ninguna identidad.
Solo reconozco el descanso del sol
      tras la ventana opaca
      y la sinsonrisa familiar
      después de la última cena.
      La herencia de materia descompuesta
será la luna nueva entre los dientes
      para no extrañar las cicatrices
      sobre la arena,
      el corazón descompuesto
flota bocabajo en esta corriente lejana
      que ya es una partícula
      del océano
      sin espíritu.

      Dejaré una mañana
      los cubiertos sin lavar,
      sumergidos y relajados
      como cuerpos cobrizos
      en el ocaso del verano
      después de la comida.
      Se dejarán asear dóciles
      por unas manos valientes
      (las mías solo intentan escribir
      poemas o epitafios).

      English Version:

      I. Without Direction

      What follows
      the year of my self,
      the sunsets were not purple
      nor celestial firestorms.
Six o’clock would arrive and sometimes catch
      a cry of solitude:
“Is it you, Dad?” from the little neighbor,

with his five-year-old ear pressed against the door.
The hunger of Kuri and her injured paw.
Almost always the song of the black bird
in the company of its only happy shadow.
The backlight of the window and its bars,
and the new figures stretched out,

      conversing on the sea wall.

[Here no one knows if they arrive or
      leave for the third time.]
      In this following year,
      in the tasteless dusk,
colors plunge sharply onto the sofa,
the characters in books finish alone
      their stories.
And my mother remembers her mother,
and the whistling of sad air escapes without pressure
      from her left arm,
      announcing the end of routine.

The vein that was a river is now a dark stain
      on rough skin.
      The red color slides,
      travels sharply and senselessly,
      lands on the empty table
      like a newly fallen arrow.

      II. Irreversible

I return to the normalcy of tangled hair
      and concave steps,
      subject to the usual fall,
      to the long circular walk
      of Sunday night,
      to the resonant chest thump
      that hurts only
      until the next day.
I go back to braiding the long hair
      that grows inside my prism-eyes
like the desire that is never softly touched,
      irreversible,
      a game of knotted legs
      with no return to freedom.

      III. Everyday

      The house stands
      with no way out,
      the guest tableware
      and metal bodies
      at recess hour.
The silverware still preserves the image
of when we were all someone else,
and there as I look at myself
I discover the newly born smile
      but death sometimes exaggerates
      its act of departure
      or of arrival?

And what would you say, Wislawa,
      in “End and Beginning”:
      “After every war
      someone has to clean up.
Things won’t just order themselves (…)”

      A vile and insufficient chore
      to understand
      the sound of slow water
      escaping through the pipe
      with fingerprints
      with no identity.
I only recognize the sun’s rest
      behind the opaque window
      and the familiar no-smile
      after the last supper.
      The legacy of decomposed matter
will be the new moon between the teeth
      to not miss the scars
      on the sand,
      the decomposed heart
floats face down in this distant current
      that is now a particle
      of the ocean
      without spirit.

      One morning I will leave
      the unwashed cutlery,
      submerged and relaxed
      like bronzed bodies
      in the twilight of summer
      after the meal.
      They will be docilely cleaned
      by brave hands
      (mine only try to write
      poems or epitaphs).

A person walking in the snow

Description automatically generated

Lo he decidido.

        WINTER

        By Rosalba Esquivel Cote

I open one eye, and then the other, it’s already dawn, the night passes quickly, I keep yawning, I scratch my eyes.

I’m glad I can continue snuggling between the white cotton sheets that dress my bed.

And that increasingly frayed blue blanket that my mother bought me in Chiconcuac 20 years ago.

Without a doubt I feel blessed, lucky… immensely happy for that enviable moment.

I can’t help it, curious, I get up to look out the window, the blizzard has passed.

I see through the fogged glass the increasingly intense daylight peeking out from behind the neighborhood.

The sky is light blue, at this time it is illuminated with intense tones of reds, yellows and oranges.

Like colors of the curtain that precedes the presence of the sun. A colorful introduction to the day that is born.

Resplendent, but no more than the painful light reflected by the ground covered in nothingness.

After the storm, a lot of snow and ice have accumulated in the yard, on the street and in the park.

I can’t tell the well-kept cedar trees from the neighbor’s, I don’t even see where the sidewalk begins.

I feel cold, and the spectacle of dawn shows a white desert of crystal sandstones.

Some maples standing on poles move at the whim of the wind.

The panorama makes me feel colder, but not because of the lack of heat, but rather the coldness of feeling.

As of sadness, as of nostalgia, as of anxiety. Time passed, it left.

I don’t feel like going out, I prefer to stay still and sit in my plush chair.

Inside my red flannel pajamas decorated with reindeer, and my striped socks.

Yes, also warm with that blanket made by artisans from the State of Mexico that smells like my bed.

Sipping a very warm “Abuelita” chocolate, and slices of toasted bolillo.

And what better, accompanied by Carlos Fuentes, Gabriel García Márquez e Isabel Allende.

In one of those sips I raise my head to try to surprise the crow that stops at the window.

I don’t see it, the only thing I look at is the smooth and mysterious landscape, which never ceases to surprise me.

When did I get here? I can still smell the freshly mowed grass.Bees prowling the flowers in my garden, Robin Thrushes chasing each other in search of a mate.

The radiant sun, the beach with hot visitors, the eternal days and the very short nights.

My t-shirt is decorated with a blueprint, my jean shorts and my leather sandals.

How quickly the wind passed, the falling leaves, the beautiful scarlet and vermilion sunsets.

People’s walks, family gatherings on weekends around the barbiquiu.

The laughter, the dogs running after the frisbees, the children muddy with dirt and ice cream.

Where was all that, where was that life?

I enjoyed every season, every moment, every breath, every blink.

I close my eyes and begin to remember. Remembering means I lived, that I was there.

I’m still here to experience even more, to see more, to know more, to live more.

I have decided. I have nothing left but to dress for the occasion.

Accompanying my winter outfit are my scarf and my hat that I knitted with the Artivistas.

I go out to enjoy, I go out to live the winter, because that’s life.

Life marches relentlessly, life doesn’t stop, life doesn’t wait.

But life gives enough time. Time to learn, to make mistakes and to start again.

Life touches you every second. Life comes when you inhale and goes when you exhale, just like that, just like that.

And I go out to live, to live the winter.

A mi derecha Drexel University, y The University of Pennsylvania,

“No tan aprisa”, – me dice–  aveces me recuerda.

”– me pregunta.

          English Version:

          The Coffee is Good

          By Obed Arango

          Moving water

          From the Schuylkill River.

          How the train moves

From Elm Street to the City of Philadelphia.

          Water.

          Ephemeral.

          Instant thinking.

Feel that I feel and I don’t feel,

In the blink of an eye the river moved forward,

          The train moved forward,

          The light advanced,

And without further notice, I advanced.

On the horizon, I see the leafless willows,

And like a cyclorama the sleepers of the road pass,

They are left behind, impossible to count them,

In the carriage the silence becomes a murmur,

It is imperceptible, steps go up, steps go down,

New voices join the wagon destined for silence.

The silence of the morning has said goodbye.

A new station “East falls” is announced,

The river is ice, it is snow, it is water that moves,

The water breaks the image of branches, of houses,

And from a magenta, blue, orange, tangerine sky,

That mix to form colors without borders.

The light changes, I see the shadows that are marked

On the bars that limit the passage of the tracks.

“Life is movement,” the children would say before.

The Schuylkill River is the sky inverted in motion,

On the horizon the clouds change their pattern,

          static buildings are mere scenery

At the whim of the light.

The painting of the sky in intense colors with the sunrise

          they dim,

The red is no longer so red, it becomes pink,

The purple reminds me of Susana’s dress in Lerdo Park

The year is 1989, and her image, as well as that light, are diluted in the water.

The mandarin orange has turned into segments,

The sun wins the game, it prevails, I get frustrated

          Because it escapes my senses,

          Small imperceptible changes,

          Manyunk station announced,

I felt, felt, felt, is the word that stings me

          Mind that does not rest.

          How does heaven feel?

What does traveling light feel like?

How does ice feel like it looks like a silver mirror?

Ice and snow, snow and ice, is it the same cold?

As the snow falls, silence wins, prevails

          The noise subsides

Silence and peace live in the snow.

The anxiety that boggled my thoughts,

The frustration of seeing life pass by without realizing it!

          Temple Station arrives.

          About to enter the underground.

With a changing sky that goes away.

The 30 street station emerges with its tall columns.

The sculpture dedicated to all workers

          Who died building the railway,

          “The Angel of the Resurrection”

Who embraces with his arms and covers with his wings

          To a worker who lies.

Crossed and I see the high ceilings

The light that creates shadows of the

          Hundreds of passengers walking,

Each one in his own direction,

          And its Art Deco architecture.

I leave the station, and give

my first step on Market Street.

The sky is gone, everything is light,

the silhouettes of the buildings to my left

To my right Drexel University, and The University of Pennsylvania,

My mother and father come in one of the translucent rays,

          Their love accompanies my path.

The clouds are positioned over the city,

The snow piles up flake after flake,

The floor freezes, each of my steps

gain security. I think about the class I will teach

This day, I mentally review the concepts.

I see the teacher, she comes in the distance,

          Raise your hand, we smile,

“Not so fast,” she tells me, sometimes she reminds me.

A thought assails me: “life is passing away.”

“Shall we get a coffee? “– she asks me.

The snow falls, the sky changes, we walk,

          Life moves on…

For a moment, for a moment at 34th and Walnut Street

          I feel full of existing.
