This is no regular story; this story the villain wins the fight. In a world of magic, some people use it for good or bad, but if you have more than one or more than two powers, you are treated better than others. For someone who has five powers, that become one of the greatest heroes but cannot defeat one of the strongest villains. This is how one of the greatest heroes loses a battle for the first time.

The bell had just rung, and it was time for me to go back to my dorm room. I was ready to call my younger sister Evelyn, but then I heard my name get called by my bff Rudy.

“Maggie!”

“Yes?” I said

“Ready to go back,” she said. “Mhm,” I said.

Blossom High… my favorite school. I love it. “Hey, Maggie, aren’t you happy that we are going to be heroes together?” Rudy said.

“No…” I said.

“You aren’t happy,” she said.

“No… I’m excited!!” I said. I can’t wait.

Two weeks later, I went to training and found a few hiding villains. When I got back to Blossom High, there were lots of people that were cheering for me for being one of the heroes that found the most villains. When I got to my dorm, I looked at some city footage to find more villains. After some time, I found a villain hiding in an alleyway. But, something did not look right because the villain kept looking both ways. When the villain stopped moving, the camera went black, and I couldn’t see anything. I kept on investigating by looking at more footage that the villain was in.
A few days later, I found out that the villain’s power was that he could hack into any device just with his mind. He also had a hideout where his villain group hung out they were called the Sunset Crows.

So I got ready to find where the hideout was hidden. When I got to the alleyway, I was looking for clues that might help me find where the hideout was, and I found a button. I pushed the button, and a secret door opened, so I went in walking slowly.
“It’s pretty dark in here,” I said as I walked through the hallway. I kept on walking until I came across a room, and I slowly tiptoed in. I saw files and paper everywhere. I picked one up and read

“5/12/24 from SR to Mike thank you for bringing us to the SR here. There are lots of villains and shadows that live here,” I asked myself. What’s SR? And there are lots of villains there.

“And if you forgot what SR is, it’s the shadow realm. In this realm, all the villains and shadows that escaped came to the SR,” I finished reading. All of a sudden, I heard my code name “Luna,” someone said. I turned around and said, “Who are you?”

“I am the shadow you have been looking for,” he said.

“My name is Mike,” he said.

“Shadow?” I said, “What’s a shadow,” I asked.

“A shadow is a type of villain,” Mike said.

“There are types of villains?” I said.

“Yes, there are…and you are going to meet them.”

“Mike, did you trap the hero?… Uhm, what’s her name again?” someone said. “her code name… or her real name.”

“Um, I guess her code name.” “her code name is Luna,” he said. “And I did trap her…I am going to send her now.”

What are they talking about, I thought. All of a sudden, a portal opened, and I fell in. When I woke up, I was on a bed and saw a girl looking at me.

“Are you okay?” she asked in a worried voice.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“I’m J-Jade…Jade the healer,” she stuttered.

“Where am I?,” I said.

“You are in the shadow realm”

“THE SHADOW REALM!!” I yelled.

”Shhhh… they’re going to hear you. I was able to get to you before the shadows did,” Jade said.

As I calmed down, I noticed that her hair wasn’t like the normal hair colors that the people back at home had. Her hair was a pastel rainbow with white. I couldn’t help myself but ask, “Is that your real hair color?”.

She looked confused “Yes it is”.

”Oh, I was just asking because I’ve never seen hair like yours before back at home.”

“I can tell that you are not from here, so tell me what is your world like?” Jade asked.

“Where can I begin?” And I began to tell her all about my realm.

A few moments later, I hear her tell me that 60% of her realm is villains, 30% are shadows, and 10% of the realm is good people. I told her that I was a hero in the other realm and that I could help her realm to make it better. Jade was thrilled to hear that and told me that there was someone who could train me to be good at using my skill and magic.

We walked out of the building we were in and entered a ten-story building next to it. While we entered, I saw an empty big blue room through the window. As we were walking through the hall, we took a turn, and all of a sudden, we heard a loud POP! Then a girl appeared out of thin air and said in a disturbed voice:

“Who are you guys? And what are you doing here?”

“Calm down, Alyssa, it’s me,” Jade said in a smooth voice.

“Oh, what are you doing here, Jade, and who’s that with you?” Alyssa said.

“This is Maggie, and I wanted to ask if you could train her,” Jade said.

“And why would I do that,” Alyssa said.

“Maggie is from the other realm and is a hero. She wants to help us,” said Jade.

“Mmm, I guess I can train her, but I can’t fully trust this Maggie though,” said Alyssa, unsure of how to train her. “We can start right now,” Alyssa exclaimed.

I trained day and night for a week straight. For training, she taught me how to fight by using my skills. Every day during training, Jade made us lunch and dinner. After a few weeks, Alyssa told me that she would send me to Kevin one. I asked her:

“Who is Kevin one?”

“Kevin one is a guardian that tests your skill and magic,” said Alyssa.

“Ok, when am I going?” I asked.

“You are going tomorrow,” Alyssa said.

I went to sleep that night to make sure I had enough energy for tomorrow. The next day, Alyssa and Jade brought me to Kevin one’s training field. “This is the so-called hero that I’m going to test?” Kevin said.

“Yes,” I said.

“Mmm ok let’s start the test now,” Kevin said.

“Kevin,” Jade said.

“What?” Kevin said in a rough voice.

“Please let her pass,” said Alyssa.

“Fine,” Kevin said, rolling his eyes.

We started the first test, and I passed. The second test was pretty hard, but I passed. The last test was to fight Kevin one, but I wasn’t strong enough to beat him.

“I will let you pass under one condition,” said Kevin one.

“Uh, what condition?” I said.

“You let a little bad remain in this realm,” Kevin exclaimed.

“Ok, fine,” I said.

“You are free to go,” he said.

“Thanks,” I said in a worried voice.

I left as soon as that happened. “Hey, Kevin, did you put the tracker on the Luna?” someone said on the walkie-talkie.

“Yes, Eina, now where is my money,” Kevin said madly.

“I will give you it now,” said Eina coldly.

As I walked on the street, someone came running at me, and I fell, “Hi Luna, do you remember me?” she said.

“No, who are you?” I said, worried

“It’s me, Eina, the girl you locked in jail,” she said.

“Eina…HOW DID YOU GET OUT?” I yelled.

“Oh, I have my ways,” she smirked.

“Holder of five powers, you know people only liked you because you had five,” Eina said.

“No, they liked because I’m a good person,” I said. I saw that people were looking at us and gathering around.

“Good person, you,” she started laughing.

“What, I am a good person,” I said.

“That whole realm and you did not listen to people that had less power because you thought they were weak and couldn’t do anything, but now it’s time for them to shine,” Eina exclaimed loudly. I took my hand and was going to use my Telekinesis to throw her, but she grabbed my hand and tossed me across the street. I was getting ready to throw a spike ball at her, but my power didn’t work.

“How does it feel not to be able to use your power, mmm,” she smiled.

“What did you do, how did you do that?” I said.

“Do you think I would tell you,” she kept on smiling. I started to feel weak and tired.

“Oh, and I already took care of your friend,” Eina started laughing.

“Uh…what,” I said as I took my last breath.

“Yes, I complete my promise,” Eina yelled out.

GUY EoM2 Myth Scene

“¡Maggie!”

“¿Sí?” Yo dije

“Listo para regresar”, dijo. “Mmm”, dije.

Blossom High… mi escuela favorita, me encanta.

dijo Rudy.

“No yo dije.

“No eres feliz”, dijo.

“No… ¡¡Estoy emocionado!!” Yo dije. No puedo esperar.

Me di vuelta y dije: “¿Quién eres?”.

“Soy la sombra que estabas buscando”, dijo.

“Mi nombre es Mike”, dijo.

“¿Sombra?”

“Soy J-Jade… Jade la sanadora”, tartamudeó.

 “¿Dónde estoy?”, dije.

“Estás en el reino de las sombras”

“¡¡EL REINO DE LAS SOMBRAS!!” I grité.

“Shhhh… te van a escuchar.

Dijo Kevin.

“Sí, he dicho

“No, ¿quién eres tú?” dije preocupado

“Eina… ¿CÓMO SALISTE?” I grité.

“Buena persona”, comenzó a reírse.

Yo dije.

“¿Crees que te lo diría?” siguió sonriendo. Empecé a sentirme débil y cansado.

    The numbers change
    The wax keeps dripping
    The flame keeps burning

    An eerie feeling creeps
    Each year
    It’s you

    The dark bliss surrounds
    The name is yours
Pretty and decorated, your cake is

    Synchronized voices merge
    Your name rings
    All focus on you

    Blow the candles out
    A wish swirls
    You’re a kid still

    Split second
    Flashes of your memories
    Evanescent sentiment

    Time is surreal
    Awakening it is
    Dreamlike state

    Open your eyes
    While tears pool
    Short-lived occurrence

    Keep me here forever
    My song concludes
    A comfort in the uncomfortable

    A moment for granted
    A moment never cherished
    A cycle never ending
    Until it ends

    Eres tú

    La dicha oscura rodea
    El nombre es tuyo
Bonita y decorada, tu tarta queda

    Voces sincronizadas se fusionan
    Tu nombre suena
    Todos se centran en ti

    Apaga las velas
    Un deseo gira
    Eres un niño todavía

    Fracción de segundo
    Destellos de tus recuerdos
    Sentimiento evanescente

    El tiempo es surrealista
    Despertar es
    Estado de ensueño

    Abre tus ojos
    Mientras las lágrimas se acumulan
    Ocurrencia de corta duración

    Mantenme aquí para siempre
    Mi canción concluye
    Un consuelo en lo incómodo

    Un momento por sentado
    Un momento nunca apreciado

Babel is a creative reading-writing training class under the instruction of Luisa Sandorff, a young Venezuelan-American high school student who understands the challenge of being bicultural and bilingual in a school environment where monolingualism dominates, and in which digital technology distances students from colored pencils. Babel is a space where primary school students at CCATE imagine, create, combine written and graphic imagination, and where they share moments of free creation.

This is the second installment of Babel for REVARTE, and as Louisa comments: “I am very proud of my students, each of them enjoyed the process of imagining their characters, writing about them, and sharing little stories.”

The class also includes the assistance of students from Villanova University and St. Joseph University.

        Roots

        By Francis Arellano

Since I came into this world, Zapotec surrounded me everywhere. It was always more than a language spoken in my community. Zapotec is heard through the music my father plays with his trumpet, our ancestral dances, in the laughter of my mother and my aunts, and through our bodies when we dance our traditional sones and syrups. I carry my Zapotec Serrano roots in my blood, although I have lost my language.

I am the daughter of immigrant parents from a town in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, Mexico. That town is called Villa Hidalgo Yalálag (Yalhalj). Yalálag inhabits the indigenous Zapotecs. My dad told me that Yalhalj means scattered hill, and it is. The name says that in any town in the Sierra you will find a Yalalteco. The Yalaltecos have migrated to the city of Oaxaca, Mexico City, and even the United States. My parents and many Yalaltecos migrated to Los Angeles, California, where I was born and raised with my sister.

My sister and I were born trilingual, but now we are bilingual. Since we were born in the United States, we are expected to learn English. We were also born in a Zapotec home, where our parents speak Zapotec. We were expected to speak the language of our origin. Spanish was adapted by Yalalteco migrants in the 90s. In Los Angeles all Mexicans speak Spanish, so Spanish was also integrated into our communities for more than 20 years. Thus our destiny was written that my sister and I spoke Zapotec, Spanish, and English. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

From the second generation of the Yalaltecos in Los Angeles, my generation, they took our Zapotec language away from us. Like any parent, my parents raised us with their language. My sister’s daycare was our aunt’s house. There they only spoke to him in Zapotec. I had to go to a daycare for low-income families. In this place, they spoke to me in Spanish and English. When we entered primary school, classes were only conducted in English. Primary school was where the teachers and the school forbade us to speak any language other than English. I began to have the beliefs of Americans, the only thing that helped me was to speak English.

I have always kept Spanish because it is how I communicate with my parents, aunts, and uncles. Also, my dad bought us Disney movies in Spanish. We listen to music in Spanish. It was easier not to forget Spanish because it surrounded us in every aspect. Zapotec was more difficult to preserve because the only resources I had were my parents. There were no books, movies, or music in Zapotec where I could practice it. Over time, I no longer understood the conversations of my Yalalteco community. This is how I became bilingual.

Until now, I have mourned the loss of part of my cultural identity. But now, I have sought that connection to my language through other means. My dad is a musician, he is a trumpet player. He started playing the trumpet when he was nine years old. When he came to the United States, he never left that passion. Now he plays drums and regional music from Yalálag and Oaxaca. At home, I listen to the music he produces with his trumpet while he rehearses. The melody of traditional Yalálag music surrounds our house. My mom loves to cook traditional Oaxacan food. Our quality time is making Oaxacan-style tamales with banana leaves. Together we prepare the sauce, we torte the tamales, and we coo over it with a lot of love. Additionally, my mother prepares dry broth, a traditional Yalálag dish. With the dried ribs that my aunts send, she makes the broth accompanied with bean tamales. When we sat down to eat we tried the Yalalteco flavor and listened to Yalalteco music with my dad’s CDs. Yalálag lives within me and many of my generation. Young people are integrating into our customs through dance, music, traditional costume, and our communal values. Maybe the language was lost, but our Yalalteco pride and blood cannot be taken away from me.

Students at CCATE have many ideas about their schools that could change their learning environments for the better. Their main ideas are more free time for socializing and choosing what they get to learn, but one that stood out the most was the idea of having their voices heard by the adults in their classrooms.

After going to school for many days out of the year, we ask kids what they love most about school, and what did they say?

Friends. Going to school and being surrounded by kids their age is what gets them most excited for school. It’s also part of the reason they love CCATE. Kids love the time they spend at CCATE because of the community that CCATE has built for them.

Getting to spend time with their friends in fun learning environments at school and at CCATE is what kids love most about their day.

“I get excited for the day because I get to see my friends. We get to make jokes and play tag outside,” said Ricardo Limon, a student at CCATE.

Friends help make school a lot more enjoyable, but kids have many more ideas on how to make their schools a better place. Mainly, when asked about something that could help improve school and learning, kids talked about freedom, and more engaging activities in classrooms. Many students claim to learn better when they participate in hands-on activities where they are able to learn the material through experience.

“I think we should have more fun activities that you can learn in, like experiments in science and educational field trips,” said 6th grade Kaylee Garcia.

Many students talked about how they wished they could have the same freedom for school that they have at CCATE. Having more free time in school to take breaks from learning, as well as being able to choose what they want to learn. Choosing what to learn is a big wish for a lot of students, which is one of the reasons why they love CCATE. Students at CCATE have the freedom to choose what they are interested in, which helps them engage in class. Many would like to see this idea be carried over to their schools.

“Something that would make me more interested in school is if we could go to any class we want, whatever we are interested in,” said student Kevin Welchez.

A very big thing that came up when listening to what students want for CCATE and for school was the idea that student ideas should be incorporated into decision making at their schools and at CCATE. Student voices should be heard in learning environments so that the perspectives of learners can be brought into the conversation. Bringing their voices into the conversation is important so that kids can see that their opinions matter, and that their opinions can change their learning environments for the better.

“I think that the teachers could help me in school by listening to me and my ideas,” said 3rd grade student Jade Cabrera.
