Different ways of dreaming, or at least mine

Painting by Jaruko Hisijara, “Snowy Village” Oil on cardboard. (Jaruko was Lina’s grandmother, she was a Mexican-Japanese painter 1945-2022)

Hi! I’m Lina, I’m 16 years old and I live in Aguascalientes, Mexico. I consider myself a person who dreams a lot, but I have had a specific dream that I have not been able to stop dreaming, and that is to be able to compose music for movies or video games, or simply be a composer. To put it more in context, I will tell you about myself.

I was born in a small city in Aguascalientes, where there is almost no art. Here the style is more industrial, perhaps unlike Mexico City, which has many museums. Here in Aguascalientes we have them, but nobody visits them (unless you are a tourist). Well, my parents always put me into sports a lot since I was little and I remember that I wanted to be a veterinarian, but one day, I don’t know why, I told my parents that I wanted to learn to play the piano. And suddenly, as if by chance, everything came together: an acquaintance of my mother’s (who is a music teacher) asked her if she would look for a piano teacher, and she said yes. At the age of 6, my adventure with music began. It wasn’t easy, to be honest, there were several challenges, and I want to talk about one in particular: when I decided that I wanted to study composition.

When I turned 9, my piano teacher, called Blanca Zúñiga (who was a harpist), told me that she could no longer be my piano teacher because I had reached a level where she could no longer teach me. So she recommended the teacher and pianist Astrid Camarena (who had specialized in teaching, or pedagogy for teaching), and I started with her. But with her, unlike with my other teacher, I discovered that I really liked composing. For me, it was a lot of fun, unlike releasing new music, which sometimes stressed me out. But hey, not everything is easy.

One day, when I think it was my second composition that I handed in to her, she said to me: “Hey, wouldn’t you like to compose music for movies? Your style is really good for soundtracks.” The first time, I thought: “OMG! That doesn’t sound bad, I’ve never thought about that.” First of all, I had never thought about what I wanted to be when I grew up, beyond the fact that when I was little I wanted to be a veterinarian, but that was forgotten over time. Then, I discovered the films of Studio Ghibli, and after listening to the soundtracks of the films that Joe Hisaishi made, I thought: “I want to do it.” But well, I was still a little girl.

Years go by and one day comes when my piano teacher tells us that she can no longer be my teacher because she achieved one of her dreams, which was to live in Canada, which had been very difficult… but she did it! She achieved a DREAM.

But, for my part, I had been left without a piano teacher, but she recommended a teacher called Aaron, who was very cool, and with him I began to grow. By this time, I was already playing in an ensemble called Beatus Tempus, in which we played baroque music. It was very fun, but well, we stayed with Aaron.

Aaron was not as demanding as Astrid, but his classes were fun. However, something happened: I really wanted to play a lot of things and he said yes, but for some reason, we never finished them. I started to have a hard time keeping my attention on a piece that needed hours of study, but I didn’t give it any importance and kept going until I released the revolutionary study op.10 no.12. However, when this happened, it was strange because I loved composing, but I didn’t like playing so much. And something else happened: I didn’t want to play the piano anymore, but then personal problems with my family occurred, and my grandmother was very sick. Suddenly, music came to embrace all my pain and I was able to get it out. It was very complicated, but I kept going despite all that pain I had, which I soon discovered was depression.

I don’t like to talk about this very much, but I consider it part of my growth to follow my dreams. Some time passed and I turned 15. My dad gave me the best present I have ever received for my birthday: a PIANO. I was fascinated. I remember that the day it arrived was March 8th (International Women’s Day, a day to commemorate all those women who are missing and whose relatives are still searching, or without going too far, all the women who have experienced some type of sexual violence in our country. But well, that’s another topic). So I named my piano LIBERTY, because it helped me have the freedom that my heart wanted, despite all the problems and challenges that life had put in front of me, and to share my music and have happy moments.

Painting by Jaruko Hisijara, “Cáscada” Oil on cardboard.

I don’t remember what day it was, but suddenly I had a burnout with my instrument; I didn’t want to play it anymore, but I really liked it. I started high school and met a lot of really cool people, and obviously there are those who are like: “ASHHH!”, but one day I met a girl who played the saxophone, who is a year older than me. She loved jazz and was really cool. By then, I had already given up on the piano, also because I gave up. I said: “How am I going to study the composition career that I want so much, if I don’t have the knowledge they ask me for in my city? First of all, the career I want doesn’t even exist in my city. I need knowledge of music theory, and in the high school I go to (which is for Arts and Humanities) they only give me the most basic. They’re not going to help me prepare for my career.” I had already given up; I saw my dream of composing as just another dream, an impossible one, which hurt knowing that it “was never going to come true.”

Time goes by and new tuners came to tune my piano. Whenever you get your piano tuned, you have to play it to see if everything is okay. I played one of my compositions that I made during this two-year period when I was no longer playing my instrument. The composition was called A Rainy Day Mr. Sakamoto. I named it that because I was inspired by a song called Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (from a movie) that was composed by composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. Although I may have left the piano for two years, I continued playing as a pianist for the OFILAGS (Aguascalientes Philharmonic Orchestra) or composing from time to time, but not every day was about studying. It’s strange, because despite everything, the music was still there.

The point is that they already tuned it, and I played to see if everything was okay. When I was playing my composition, the tuners told me: “You have a lot of talent, you are very musical, unlike other pianists we have heard and are very good, and above all you express what you want, without the fear of someone hearing you (because that is very common in musicians). Maybe, because of all the things I had been through and felt throughout my life, having to see music more as an emotional help that healed me and the beautiful memories it left me, I saw it as something very precious to me. They recommended a Russian teacher to me, called Londa. Suddenly, music knocked on a door again so that I could return to doing what I was passionate about. However, I was already in high school, I had 16 subjects, I played sports, and this teacher was from the old school. She didn’t care why I didn’t have time to play the whole repertoire. She also used phrases like: “You don’t know anything,” or she would slap me if I didn’t do it.

I remember that one time she called my mother and said: “Your daughter isn’t interested in music if she continues like this. I don’t want to give her any more lessons. What is certain is that she is very good at expressing herself on the piano.” And then another discovery about me happened. My mother is a psychopedagogue and works with children with ADHD, autism, etc. She told her about me, that although I didn’t have a formal diagnosis from a psychiatrist, she told her that I had some ADHD, and that was why I played a lot of sports since I was little, because sports helped me calm down.

Painting by Jaruko Hisijara, “Cáscada” Oil on wood.

One day, my mom sat me down and told me about what that teacher had said. She didn’t want to teach me anymore, but she said I was very talented and had some ADHD, which she never wanted to tell the world because they would treat me like someone “sick,” so to speak, they wouldn’t treat me like a normal girl. But the ADHD thing, rather than taking it as a bad memory, the first thing I thought was: NOW EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE! But when I heard that that teacher didn’t want to teach me, I gave up, again.

After a month, I talked to my friend Sara, who played the saxophone, who I feel was the person who was going through the most similar thing to me. I felt that music wasn’t my thing, that maybe I wanted to study something else, like medicine or something like that. The truth is, I didn’t know. I told her EVERYTHING, and she told me that she started playing the bassoon, but that she didn’t like the typical rules that are used in music as a performer either, that she liked to create (like me). And she told me: “Linita, here in Ags, first of all, composition is hard to find, jazz is much more. I also felt bad thinking that I wouldn’t make it, but my desire to do jazz is so great that I don’t mind doing a 3-year preparatory course and then entering the degree, because I want to make my dream come true, and that’s the most important thing for me. Many people have told me no, even at the beginning my parents were against me studying music, but despite everything, I’m going to do it. Linita, you are very talented and musical, and besides, you compose very well. Anchovy (who is another very talented pianist who studies in the music preparatory course) says that you are very talented, he even admires you. I know that you will make it, Linita.”

After that, I was impressed and inspired by what my friend had told me, and I started to question myself: What do I want to do with my life? What is my dream? How am I going to achieve it? And suddenly, all the answers to my doubts came out and I realized that the problem was not my ADHD, nor the teachers who told me that I would never achieve it, nor all the other things, but that it was me putting those barriers that “society imposed on me” but that in reality never existed. Because you decide if you are going to listen to what others think or to your dreams.

And that is when I started to investigate and found the UNAM curriculum for musical composition, and I saw that I was willing to start a 3-year preparatory course and then a 4-year degree just to be a composer. And from there I wanted to visit new countries to have better compositions. And suddenly, more dreams came out, and I discovered that dreams never end and that one never stops dreaming.

A few months ago, I met Astrid, my second piano teacher, the one who achieved a DREAM. She went to hear me at OFILAGS and invited me to go out and talk. I told her ALL of my experience, which I told you about before, and that I didn’t have a piano teacher because there wasn’t one who could help me with my needs. She told me: “Pau, I can help you with the piano, let me be your teacher again.” Thanks to technology, she was able to give me classes from Canada, while I was here in Mexico, and so it was. I also met my first piano teacher, who is a harpist and a graduate of the National Conservatory of Music, and she told me that she could help me prepare for my music theory exam for UNAM. And my other high school music teachers also told me that they were going to help me. Suddenly, music had, once again, knocked on that door and continued to pursue me to achieve MY DREAM and my DIFFERENT WAYS OF DREAMING.

I think it’s better not knowing the truth than actually knowing. I know this is a reach but just hear me out. If you know the truth, you are left thinking a bunch of questions of how and why it happened. That’s not very good right? Exactly my point. If I’m being honest, I’m just better left not knowing at all then being kept awake at night by my own thoughts. And if I do know the truth, I want to know everything, not just a half truth but the whole truth.

I recently watched a movie called “Flipped” and it had a meaningful saying about the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. I think that it’s very true because although when it is just the parts, it’s nice, but when you look at it as a whole it becomes mesmerizing and fun to look back at. Although, it’s not good when these parts are bad and then when you finally realize the greater picture, it makes you feel overwhelmed or just overall dumb.

I like to believe if something isn’t the way you want, then it’s just better to leave it alone. This is only specific to people. If it’s something changeable like for example a drawing where if you make a mistake then you can just erase it and pretend it didn’t happen, whereas a person you can’t really do that, because if you make a mistake you can’t just really take it back.

That part makes me mad because although I forgive someone for something they did to me, it seems like I can’t just seem to get it out of my head, it’s just stuck there and can’t be removed unless I move on from it. Speaking of which, I never move on. I just tell myself that I could be going through way worse and that’s usually my way of coping, which is definitely not healthy at all, but if it works then it works.

There’s a line in a song called “A BOY IS A GUN*” by Tyler The Creator that really sticks out and means a lot to me: “How come you’re the best to me? I know you’re the worst for me.” It has a lot of meaning because this can relate to so many situations. Something that’s hard that no one talks about is letting go of people that you know aren’t good for you. Now that right there is probably the top three most hardest things to do. I hate it. Yes I know hate is a strong word but the feeling of anger and just how it makes you feel so dumb for not noticing it before is enraging.

The anger I feel for not being able to tell before, gets to me. It makes me have absolutely feral mood swings. I could be daydreaming about how it was so wonderful and then next second I am overwhelmed with anger, and by the next I’m crying about how I just don’t feel like I am good enough.

Something that I truly hope no one goes through is getting used by someone you thought you could trust. That alone will break you, no matter how strong you think you are. One thing I noticed today was that no one really talks about how parents’ trauma affects them and makes them who they are as a person. For example, if someone had a childhood where they didn’t have anything, that probably makes them strive for more when they already have enough. I feel like it’s so much harder for them to open up especially if they are trying to open up to their kids.

My mom told me that when that happens as they are telling their traumas is that they relive it in their head everytime they talk about it. It makes me feel some type of way because I don’t want to cause them any extra pain by asking what happened, but then again what if they can’t bottle it up anymore? I want to be there for them and I want them to talk to me about what is troubling them. I want to help and I always will.

I want to be like a complementary color. Having a color that just matches with me and looks good with me. I mean it. I want to be like blue and orange. The way they’re just complete opposites but go along so well. That’s what’s beautiful.

Music. I love music. The way it switches your mood is crazy and that’s why I love it. Because even if I feel horrible, I can feel great or I can feel however I want to feel. I get to control my thoughts and emotions with music. Also they’re just lyrics that can say more than I could ever. They help me express things that are hard for me to say. I love it, and I always will.

Overthinking is a very bad habit of mine and it will forever be my worst habit. I overthink at least once a day and I think that’s pretty normal because if I overthink the stupidest things then that means you do too, right? It gets worse when I’m doing something I know I am naturally good at. It makes me feel like I won’t ever get it right the first time or that I won’t be able to fix it. I know that I will fix whatever I messed up but once I mess up for the second time I’m over with.

As I’m writing this I genuinely feel that someone will get how I feel and just for a second think of how they aren’t alone. I want them to know they aren’t crazy. I dont like when people say that writing is boring or that it’s dumb because truly that’s not the case. I think they just don’t know how to express themselves through words or sentences. I know that once they know the exact words they wanna say they’ll absolutely love it as much as i do.

But hopefully they don’t develop the bad habit that I have, which is only being able to write about my emotions. Not that it’s bad but I just rely on it way too much. It’s like I’m only a good writer if I bottle up all my emotions and spill it all on this computer or notebook. I also love doing that though, because even if I can’t talk about it with people, I can just write it by myself with my music playing through my airpods.

I also love the fact that I write what I think so yes if you’re thinking no way her fingers are typing what she’s thinking at this exact moment (you probably aren’t thinking this) but believe it or not, I am. I haven’t stopped for about twenty some minutes which is probably a lot but I don’t think so.

Something I had realized months ago is that I really need to stop caring so much about what others and myself think. Because if you really think about it, no one cares what you do. It’s a free world and it most likely is very freeing once you stop giving too much thought to what you do. I feel like I have written almost everything I feel but not quite yet.

Feeling real. I have this thing where I don’t feel real sometimes. It gets really bad sometimes and I have panic attacks. It’s not fun and I don’t like it at all, I despise it. That’s a struggle I go through and I can’t help it. Things that can trigger it, is if I’m with some random people I don’t even know. I just start thinking about how it’s really crazy that each single person has their own thoughts, lives, problems, and how they’re alive.

It troubles me to think that I’ll see them one time and I won’t ever remember seeing them at all. You’re probably thinking that yeah obviously I won’t remember them, well yeah I know that but when you’re in the heat of the moment that thought is pretty overwhelming. Something I do to get over it is by just talking to people because if they respond back then I can just distract myself and then boom it’s done, I’m back to normal.

Okay, now I definitely ran out of things to say but honestly I don’t think this will get published but if it does then I’m okay with it. Although a story is supposed to have a plot or theme to it, sadly this doesn’t so if you read up to here then I really am surprised because throughout the whole time I was writing, I felt like I was ranting.

That doesn’t matter though because I love being real but I think I was a little too real writing this which is a scary thought. My current thought process right now is what people will think of this, or if they think this is boring or something. Most times you just have to take the risk and just go with it, take a leap of faith you know.

My dad always had this saying of being someone in life, his exact words are “Debes de ser alguien en la vida. So that’s what I’m doing, I will be someone, and hopefully I can be someone who impacted you, the reader.

Abi was a young girl who led a relatively normal life. She went to school like any other girl her age, she liked music, she enjoyed hours of reading and she was passionate about art. Everything was normal until it was time to sleep, because that was when she hid a secret.

Around the world there are very few people who have an extraordinary ability and Abi is one of them. We have always been told that dreams are a projection of the subconscious but these people like Abi know that this is false, but what is this ability? Dreams are not a projection that comes from each person, it is the projection of an entire world, of Dreaming Land and Abi has the ability to enter that world and control her dreams as she wants.

Sometimes this ability leaks to other people, that is why sometimes we can control our dreams. Abi, having this ability, knows that it also entails a great responsibility and this is to ensure that Dreaming Land does not leak into our world, because there is a very thin line that divides both.

In the middle of Dreaming Land, the prophecy says that there is a necklace with the power to filter dreams to Earth, and who wouldn’t want to filter dreams into daily life? That’s why not all of us can be guardians of the necklace; not all of us have the strength to separate our dreams from reality. And that was exactly what Abi’s job was to look after the necklace.

Just as there are good dreams, there are bad dreams. We call them nightmares, but Abi knows them as the Usurpers. These bad dreams, apart from taking away the dreamer’s peace, are dedicated to taking the dreamer straight to the crystal. Have you ever felt that when you have a nightmare you have to escape, or run? Well, those nightmares guide you to the necklace.

And what is the mission of the Usurpers? Why filter dreams into reality? We have all wanted to do that at some point, but that is impossible since the balance of space and time would be broken. If all dreams came true, everything would be a disaster. Just as there are dreams of love and rainbows, there are dreams of power and destruction.

A usurper can be a person like you or me. It is that person who lives attracted by power, by the standards of perfection. They are the main victims of nightmares, but sometimes those of us who dream are attacked by these entities. You can face the nightmare and escape it, but it is a difficult thing to do.

But tell me, are you a dreamer, or a guardian of the necklace?

                Stop Dreaming

Stop dreaming, come back to the real world, stop trying to change what happened, you can’t revive a corpse, talk like he’s alive, it’s been almost two years.

That’s what he always says: he’s dead and that’s it, but I believe in hope. You can’t do it! I did it, I did it. You can’t survive this! I’m alive, I believed in my dreams, I believed in the hope of living a new day, I dreamed of breathing and now I’m doing it.

Stop talking, I tell him, you always thought I was a fool and now I’m the one who lives, however I dream that you truly loved me and today I’m going to believe it.

I look at their names carved on the tombstone for a moment longer. He’s dead! You are too, I don’t know why I’m talking to a corpse.

As I get up from the grass where they rest, I still feel the pain of the dagger with which he tried to kill me, kill my dreams, but that doesn’t matter anymore.

I am alive because I dreamed of living, because dreams are hope, and without hope you are dead.

Un Lugar donde todos podamos vivir

¡Hola!

A Place Where We Can All Live

Drawing by Ruth Layme Cárdenas, 2025

Hi! I’m Ruth, and today I want to talk about something that interests me a lot: “Utopia.” At first, I didn’t know what it was, but after researching, I discovered a very important and meaningful word.

For me, utopia is a place where we can all live in harmony without distinctions of race, gender, religion, or social class. A place where everyone has access to education, health, and the opportunity to grow and develop. When I look at our community, I ask myself, what prevents us from creating a better community? I realize that there are significant differences. Some communities have access to basic resources, while others don’t. Some people have a roof over their heads, while others don’t.

It’s time to make others aware of the problems our community faces and the importance of creating a more just and equal place. We can start by dreaming and believing that we can make a difference. We can start doing something to change things. Utopia is not just a dream, it is a way of making things happen. It is a call to action to work together to create a better world for all.

In our community we can begin to create a utopia through small changes. We can begin to share our resources, support those who need them and work together to create a more just and equitable environment. Utopia is not a destination, it is a process and we can begin to build it today.

“Utopia is not a destination, it is a process.”
